Andrae’s Bakery, a popular restaurant and bakery in Amador City, abruptly shut its doors at the end of May.

The Andrae’s website states that the bakery is closed until later in 2020 because the owners, Matt and Kimberly Andrae, stated they needed to take a sabbatical. The site also asks customers to “check back later this year for details on things to come.” The Andrae’s Facebook page has not been updated to reflect the closure as of this writing.

Sources state the closure came suddenly and all Andrae’s employees were terminated without notice.

Online speculation centered on rising food costs caused by the COVID-19 public health emergency as the reason for the closure. Matt Andrae declined to be interviewed for this article and directed us to the Andrae’s website.

The website states that those who purchased gift certificates can do so at the following locations:

Made in Amador
14183 Old Highway 49, Amador City
www.madeinamador.com

Small Town Food + Wine
14179 Old Highway 49, Amador City
www.smalltownfoodandwine.com

Those who have plastic gift cards can call 209-267-1352 for information about how to redeem those cards.

The website also states that customers can wait to redeem their gift certificates until Andrae’s reopens, so there is hope for Andrae’s fans that the restaurant and bakery will return.
